It’s been a long winter. No less than six years after Frozen originally premiered, Disney will be releasing the sequel to one of their highest-grossing movie ever later this year. While Disney has been quiet about what this movie will be about, a trailer for the upcoming film was just released, and it serves to give us some insight into just what the film offers and what it could be about.

The trailer opens with Elsa standing before a raging sea in the middle of a storm. She appears to be wanting to learn to control her powers, as she tries running further and further onto the water as the waves push her back to dry land. After this we get a series of shots showing scattered pieces of the movie: Anna gazing at some floating frozen diamonds, Hans riding his reindeer Sven amidst a pack of other reindeer, the wind blowing Anna into the air, Elsa using her ice powers to cool off a fire, and finally a shot of the main characters all gathered together looking out over a beautiful autumn landscape. There’s very little shown in this trailer, but there are some things that we can take away.

For starters, the opening bit with Elsa, which takes up most of the trailer, definitely implies that her journey in this movie will be about learning to control her ice powers. In the first movie she learned to accept them as a part of who she is, and now she needs to learn how to use them so that they don’t use her. Also, while we do see Anna, Hans, Sven, and Olaf returning in this trailer, it seems like they’re going to be taking a backseat of Elsa’s adventures, as she remains the focal point of the trailer throughout. It’s also implied that the group will be going on some sort of quest in this film, taking them away from Arendelle, as we get a new autumn-soaked location for most of the trailer.

In addition to this, the trailer promises a darker tone than the original. While the first one was bright and had colorful whites and blues, this movie appears to be more somber and melancholic with its color choices. This might just be a trick of the trailer to hype fans up for a more mature adventure, but considering it has been six years, and those initial fans have grown up some, a more mature take wouldn’t be the worst idea. Lastly, and it may seem like a bit of a stretch, but we may, in fact, be getting at least one new character who has powers similar to Elsa. This character could act as a sort of mentor to her in helping her control her powers. I’m getting this from that one quick shot we have of the wind blowing Anna heavenward. Wind obviously can’t do that, but if there were another character who could control an element like Elsa, then it would explain this random occurrence. Heck, that might even be their entire journey: Elsa needs to find someone to help her control her ice abilities, so she and her friends set off to find someone who can teach her.

It’s still very early right now, and my predictions could easily be proven false with another trailer, but as of right now this is the way I think the movie is going to go, minus some small character interactions and set pieces. There’s definitely room to expand on the world and the mythos of this story, and if they do go that route then we could have a very entertaining movie on our hands. However, it has been a long time since Frozen was released, so who knows for sure what direction the creators will go. All we can hope is that the extra time working on this film was well-spent in crafting a worthy successor to one of Disney’s biggest movies. Frozen 2 is set to release on November 22nd, 2019.
