So it’s official: Pixar’s upcoming movie is going to be another entry into their Toy Story franchise. This feels weird to many fans because they, like myself, feel that the movies should’ve just stopped with Toy Story 3, as it gave the trilogy a satisfying conclusion and wrapped up just about everything fans loved about the series. However, with the original writer/director of the series, John Lasseter, returning to craft what’s looking to (really) be the end of the adventures of Woody and the rest of Andy’s toys, there might actually be room to be excited for the final exploits of Woody and Buzz. This excitement has only been exacerbated by the release on not one, but two teaser trailers.

The first trailer is pretty light on content. It simply shows all of Andy’s toys spinning around in a circle holding hands and dancing to the tune of “Both Sides Now” by Judy Collins. Everything’s bright and happy for the toys until we get to the final member of the ring, a spork with pipe cleaner arms and googly eyes named Forky, who freaks out and yells that he doesn’t belong here. After this he races off, causing the other toys to crash into one another in hilarious fashion.

The second trailer, while also being light on content, still gives us a bit more insight into what Toy Story 4 could possibly be bringing. In it, we see two toys, a duck and a rabbit imaginatively named Ducky and Bunny (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele respectively), standing on a carnival game talking about how much they enjoy the Toy Story movies as they try to quote Buzz Lightyear’s iconic line, which they fail to get right. Right at that moment though Woody and Buzz show up to correct them, which results in Bunny and Ducky laughing at them for the absurdity of the line when it’s looked at literally.

So like I said, both of these trailers are pretty light on content, but since they’re only teaser trailers that’s to be expected. We can glean some information from them though. One of the big things is the new addition of Forky to the roster. While he’s nothing more than a spork, he’s still been added as a toy to the rest of Bonnie’s playthings, so this could be hinting at one of the main themes of the movie. The film could look at just what makes a toy a toy, and how you don’t need something fancy or manufactured to have fun with; a simple utensil and some imagination are all you really need. Another point of interest is the location of the second trailer. While the first teaser is set before the usual Toy Story background of a blue sky with fluffy white clouds, the second one takes place at what looks like a carnival. This could just be a fun set, but it’s more than likely a hint that at least some portion of the movie is going to be taking place at this carnival. If this is true, then it could make for an interesting place for the toys to spend some time, especially compared to Sunnyside, which many fans were not particularly fond of.

Along with these two trailers Pixar has also released an official plot synopsis for the film. It reads,

Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether it’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called Forky to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.Jack Flowers

While this doesn’t give us much more insight into the film, we are given that Forky will play an important role, and that the movie will be a road trip-style flick, which sounds like it could be a lot of fun reminiscent of Toy Story 2.

There are still a couple things that we don’t know, however. Since Don Rickles, the voice of Mr. Potato Head, died two years ago without recording anymore lines, we don’t know if everyone’s favorite curmudgeonly plastic potato will make a return with a new voice actor, or if his character has been written out altogether. However, we do see Mr. Potato Head in the first trailer with the rest of Andy’s toys, so I personally think they’ll do what they did when Jim Varney, the original voice actor for Slinky Dog, passed away and replace him with someone else. They’re probably just keeping it quiet who they replaced him with. Also, we don’t know about Bo Peeps status in the film. We know that she’s a part of the movie, that Annie Potts has returned to voice her once again, and that Lasseter has said that her story is going to be a deep and personal one, but whether or not her story will be important to the movie’s narrative or simply a side point remains to be seen.

Despite that though, the rest of the movie is shaping up to possibly be a bigger hit than Incredibles 2, which for those unaware earned $1.2 billion globally, Pixar’s biggest haul ever. While there’s still some mystery surrounding the film, like who will replace Don Rickles, or what the exact plot of the movie is going to be, or just WHO is Keanu Reeves playing (Yes, Neo himself is set to voice an unknown character according to the movie’s IMDB page), it only serves to keep fans and potential moviegoers intrigued and following for more updates. With the original developers behind it and most of the original cast returning to lend their voices to their familiar roles, there’s much to be excited about with this continuation.
